How do we build an economy and a world that guarantees everybody clean, safe, and affordable housing? Across the country and around the globe, the physical spaces in which communities exist are under attack. People from rural communities are pushed from their homes and end up in overpopulated urban slums, foreclosure and eviction crises are contributing to a growing wave of gentrification, and the economy as a whole is still dangerously perched atop a stock market inflated by a commodified housing market.
Fortunately, communities are fighting back. In this track, we’ll explore how to utilize Community Land Trusts (CLTs), cooperative housing, tenant organizing, and other community based strategies to combat gentrification and the commodification of land and housing. Participants will walk away with an understanding of how to organize for development that strengthens communities instead of destroying them.
