Sachie Hopkins Hayakawa

Sachie Hopkins Hayakawa is a Youth and Student Organizer with the New Economy Coalition. Sachie grew up in the rainy Pacific Northwest, where she began to develop a commitment to environmental and racial justice. While a student at Swarthmore College, Sachie worked with groups fighting dangerous energy extraction and helped organize the country's first fossil fuel divestment campaign with Swarthmore Mountain Justice. Over the past several years, Sachie has been deeply involved with other student organizing projects aimed at building the power of young people for climate justice, including the GROW Divestment Project and the Fossil Fuel Divestment Student Network.

In the realm of communications and story-telling, Sachie has worked with YES! Magazine and as an author-researcher for the Global Nonviolent Action Database. Through these projects, Sachie has been exploring the world of movement narratives and communications, believing in the transformative potential of a well-told story.

Sachie is a member of the Maypop Collective for Climate and Economic Justice in West Philadelphia. Maypop is building with folks in Philly who are nurturing resilient communities, defending rights to land, labor, and life, and building people power from below.
